Draw-A-Day Monday 26th August – Matisse Week

Hi, here’s to a sunny bank holiday for us all.  If you have been inclined to think about drawing today instead of chilling, how about we keep it cheerful, sunny and colourful, and who better to help us there than Henri Matisse?

A brief potted history of this French artist:  he was born in 1869 and died in 1954, and was a draughtsman, printmaker and sculptor, but known mainly for his colourful paintings.  He is master of simplicity, and his compositions are perfectly constructed.  We can learn a great deal from studying his simplicity and economy of line, which are instantly recognisable as he retains a wonderful style throughout his works.

This week, let us take five images to get a sense of line, composition, tonal values, simple values, and colour.

Today, line: Google ‘Matisse drawings’ and see a wealth of material to choose from… pick a subject, be it trees, flowers or the human form, and have a go at fluid lines to express your art.
